Muhammad Ali Stops Blue Lewis This Day July 19, 1972
Muhammad Ali looking for a shot at the crown
Muhammad Ali 217½ lbs
Alvin Blue Lewis 223½ lbs
TKO at 1:15 in round 11 of 12
Location: Croke Park, Dublin, Ireland
Referee: Lew Eskin
Lewis was a former Ali sparring partner.
Ali dropped Lewis with a right hand late in the fifth round. Lewis got up at the count of nine and then the bell rang. It was the only knockdown of the fight. Ali’s trainer, Angelo Dundee, complained that Lewis got a long count and was down for 22 seconds.
The referee stopped the fight in the eleventh round, as Ali was putting on a dancing and jabbing exhibition and Lewis was unsteady on rubbery legs.
